Dadurch kann “jedes Kind” eine Bewertungsplattform für diverse Themen machen. Das können Fahrradläden, Baumärkte oder sonstige Dinge sein. Auch für Franchise Ketten sehe ich hier großes Potential. Denn der Clou ist ja, die White-Label Berwertungsplattform wird automatisch sowohl per Webbrowser als auch in App-Form für die gängigen Smartphones angeboten.

Noch gibt es noch nicht viel zu sehen, aber wie ich aus zuverlässiger Quelle weiss wird sich dies sehr bald ändern. Wer sich für den Bereich lokale Bewertungsplattformen interessiert sollte sich vielleicht einfach mal bei Christoph melden.

Platform as a Service

Now some say this last part, the deployment and scaling of single web applications is what most PaaS providers consider their sweet spot – the single reason how they justify their own margin. Be it Heroku, Engine Yard, phpfog, Scalarium, us or almost any of the impressive list of newcomers have one thing in common. Most sit on top of Amazon Web Services. The single most important reason for that is, there really isn’t much alternatives out there. Yes it’s true, there are other IaaS providers around but most of them are still trying to figure out why an API is a must have feature. This comes as no surprise, because the hosting industry isn’t used to innovate in software. For years they simply used Parallels stuff and competed in pricing. Only this time Parallels missed the bus and is way late to the Cloud party. (On a side note, that “Understanding the Cloud” article is probably the worst piece of info I’ve come across in a very long time.)

Ok, so this wasn’t exactly on topic but it’s important to understand because it is the reason why Amazon’s move into PaaS might turn out to be a big problem for some but not all the other PaaS providers. Effectively Beanstalk is free. Yes you still have to pay for the underlying AWS services you use but there is no extra for Beanstalk itself. By contrast all other PaaS prizes include Amazon’s margin plus the PaaS margin. At this point it looks a little as if Amazon is going to squash the PaaS providers much like it did with the “Cloud Management Platforms” when they launched the AWS console. Anyone remember Rightscale? Sure they support more than just EC2 but as we learned earlier none of those other IaaS providers ever really mattered in the first place.

Gameover Heroku?

Surely not. I wrote earlier that Beanstalk might be a problem for some but not all PaaS companies around. Heroku isn’t one of them, and not because they’ve been acquired by Salesforce, but because they are multi tenant. Beanstalk is not, in fact it allows you full access to all underlying AWS services including logging in to EC2 instances. That makes multi tenancy quite hard. At least for now, of course that may be subject to change in the future. Sure differentiation by additional services like an add-on marketplace as suggested here does help a little. But on its own it’s probably not enough. PaaS providers better have another competitive advantage. For add-on providers it’s always better to partner with multiple PaaS providers. No matter if those providers support the same or different languages. Because a variety of add-ons is highly latency sensitive it is best to have those add-ons in the same datacenter as the app servers. This basically means in the same AWS region. That’s why everyone needs Amazon and also Amazon needs to be careful not to ruin that evolving ecosystem because their first and foremost interest must be to have the highest possible occupation of virtual machines possible at all times. They need a wide variety of consumers on top of EC2 for that.

Multi Tenancy

Multi tenancy seems to be the way to go then. Because it allows to scale in much finer grained portions and it also allows providers to offer marketing wise very efficient free tiers. Amazon really has no interest in offering multi-tenant itself, because multi-tenancy means less virtual machines are necessary to host the same amount of applications. Good for Heroku and us, one might think. Not so good for the single-tenant ones. Now I know it’s not black and white and Rightscale also is still around and probably doing just fine. Smaller PaaS providers might differentiate by being close to the customer. But close also often means small, which might be a nice place to be but probably isn’t if you’re venture backed. Good thing is from the way Beanstalk is designed right now it doesn’t seem like Amazon is going for multi tenancy anytime soon and as I said they might not want to in the first place, so there still is time. Bad thing though, multi tenancy is the hard part. So better start now.

Not everything is a web app

True, not everything is, but will be. With all the different devices (Smartphones, Tablets, Desktops, Notebooks, Netbooks, etc.) the web is the least common denominator. It’s definitely going to be exciting to see this evolve in the future.

2010 sind einige Deutsche IaaS-Angebote hinzugekommen, leider sind viel hiervon nur Virtualisierung mit einem Schieberegler für 30 Tage, aber immerhin bewegt sich der Markt. Das Angebot von richtigem IaasS wird sich 2011 in Deutschland deutlich verbessern. Im PaaS-Markt sieht es in Europa weiterhin sehr leer aus, aber alleine der Kauf von Heroku dürfte nochmal ordentlich Schwung in den Markt bringen. SaaS ist sicherlich das am meiste wahrgenommen Cloud Computing Thema, 2011 werden hier weitere spannende Dienste hinzu kommen. Und auch bei SaaS gilt, nicht überall wo “Cloud” drauf steht ist gleich Cloud drin!

Datenschutz

Auch 2011 wird es wieder große Datenskandale geben. Doch auch wie 2010 werden die größten Skandale nicht aus Diensten der Cloud kommen, sondern aus In-House-Lösungen! Denn das größte Problem sind unmotivierte und schlecht bezahlte Mitarbeiter, die ihren Arbeitgebern eins auswischen wollen. 2011 wird aber auch zeigen das Cloud nicht immer nützlich ist, Thema WikiLeaks. Daher hoffe ich das 2011 eine starke Konkurrenz gegen Amazon auftaucht, OpenStack ist hier ein guter Lösungsansatz.

Was meinen die deutschen Cloud Macher?

Ich habe einige Cloud Anbieter aus den Bereichen IaaS und PaaS angeschrieben und um Ihre Meinung gebeten.

Wenn ich die Zukunft vorraussagen könnte… Fest steht offensichtlich, ich kann es nicht. Einen derartigen Heroku Traumexit konnte keiner vorrausgesehen. Mit etwas Glück ist jetzt auch der deutsche Markt endlich aufgewacht und erkennt das Platform as a Service nichts geringeres als die Zukunft der Softwareentwicklung ist.

In 2011 werden in Deutschland vermehrt Provider in den Cloud Markt einsteigen. In 2010 war dies noch kaum der Fall, auch wenn viele Angebote fälschlich mit Cloud betitelt wurden. So war ja bspw. fast jedes zweite Produkt auf der Cebit 2010 angeblich Cloud xyz.
Dennoch glaube ich, dass die Adaption von Cloud in Deutschland auch in 2011 noch gering sein wird. Die klassischen KMUs werden in dem Bereich in 2011 noch nicht sehr viel machen, dies sollte sich zum Jahresende hin jedoch verändern. Wir glauben, dass sich technologisch einiges in 2011 tun wird. So wird bspw. mit dem Release von OpenStack in 2011 einiges im Markt der Cloud Plattformen in Bewegung kommen. Aus unserer Sicht ist das Thema Cloud jedoch nach wie vor sehr stark IT/Admin getrieben. Dabei ist Cloud dafür prädestiniert, vom eigentlichen Anwender direkt genutzt/provisioniert zu werden. Die meisten Cloud Anbieter haben hier jedoch noch kein “Business User” taugliches Angebot (als Ausnahme sei hier bspw. Salesforce genannt). U.a. an diesem Thema, arbeiten wir derzeit sehr stark und haben schon im November 2010 eine Cloud Management Platform mit dem Business User als Anwender im Fokus vorgestellt.

Ich denke, dass Cloud Computing im Mainstream angekommen ist. Produkte wie das iPad verzichten gänzlich auf die Anschlussmöglichkeit von externem Speicher. Wer hier Daten austauschen will, muss die Cloud wählen. Und ich habe noch niemanden darüber klagen gehört – im Gegenteil: Selbst ungeübte Computernutzer haben das Prinzip in kürzester Zeit verstanden.
Auf der “echten” Technikseite gibt es nach wie vor viele Hürden: Keine API ist zum allgemeingültigen Standard geworden. Amazon ist Marktführer, die Preise sind aber inbesondere bei Dauermiete jenseits von Gut und Böse. Die deutsche und internationale Konkurrenz ist mitunter besser aufgestellt was Preise und/oder Performance angeht, der Vendor-LockIn greift aber hier ebenso. Für 2011 wünsche ich mir also vor allem etwas, das als Standard Cloudübergreifend funktioniert: Mal hier, mal dort zu deployen ist der Traum der Kunden – und mit was? Mit Recht.

Cloud-Computing wird langsam aber immer sicherer Verbreitung in Deutschland finden, auch wenn die Skepsis sicher noch eine ganze Zeit lang in der Luft hängen wird. Der Markt selbst ist in Deutschland nach wie vor noch sehr jung und wartet geradezu auf einen deutschen Hoster der Infrastruktur als Service anbietet und Amazon echte Konkurrenz macht oder den Eintritt von Amazon selbst.
Es wird sicher noch das eine oder andere Startup im Bereich Cloud-Computing auftauchen, genauso wie andere verschwinden werden, sei es durch Exit (siehe Heroku, CloudKick, CloudBees, et. al. Ende letzten Jahres) oder weil der Markt in Deutschland einfach noch nicht genug hergibt.

In 2011 wird es die ersten “echten” deutschen Cloudhostingfirmen geben, die auch für professionelle Nutzung geeignet sind. Bisher wird Cloudhosting ja eher als “ich kann die Leistungseinstellungen meines virtuellen Servers selbst wählen und ab und zu verstellen” mißverstanden.
Für mich ist Cloudhosting aber das Hosting kompletter Anwendungen in einer Cloudinfrastruktur. Also Firewalls, Loadbalancer, Frontend-Server, Applikations-Server, Datenbank-Server, Backup-Server und alles komplex vernetzt. Da fängt für mich Cloudhosting an

Das Ganze wäre jetzt auch nichtmal weiter spannend, wenn da nicht folgende kleine Anekdote wäre. Vor einiger Zeit schrieb der Enomaly Gründer auf seinem Blog eine kleine Abhandlung über Zimory die er mit dem Fazit Zimory sei wohl 5-10 Jahre zu früh schloss. Mit dem Start von Spotcloud hat sich @SamJ in seiner provokativen Art den “Spaß” erlaubt und in eben diesem Text Zimory durch Spotcloud ersetzt.

At the end of the day, I’m not convinced we’re ready for “standardized” cloud exchanges. The cloud computing industry is still emerging, there are no agreed upon standards for how we as an industry can collaborate as partners yet alone trade capacity. In a lot of ways I feel ZimoryEnomaly is putting the cart before the horse and is probably 5-10 years too early.

Automatically Scaling Out in PaaS

Actually there was nothing wrong with Cloud Camp Hamburg as an event. It was perfectly organized with speakers talking about stuff they where well prepared to talk about, lot’s of smart people also in the audience, held at a nice location, completed with awesome catering and all that for free. Yet still Cloud Camp Hamburg sucked and since there was nothing wrong with the event itself the reason has to be something else.

It’s not even a problem with the Cloud Camp Hamburg but more a problem with every Cloud Camp or other Cloud event for that matter I visited so far. It’s a problem with us Europeans not getting the bigger picture because we are busy nitpicking on time consuming details. When I started this blog over two years ago I had no idea what Cloud Computing is. Even today I consider myself rather clueless. Yet still I started this blog and my company because I believe in the huge impact this paradigm shift is about to have. One can’t be into Cloud Computing without thinking big.

Now all the events, I visited all across Germany and Europe, reduced themselves to an event trying to sell inferior products instead of cooperating, discussing and innovating on the topic. As time goes on we are dropping further and further behind the big US companies because we are busy rambling about our oh so important data protection (e.g.). Yeah we are obsessed about data protection and don’t trust companies, and yeah I’m also concerned about keeping private what I consider private. But to innovate in technology, technology has to come first. And this is what we all together failed at yesterday and at every other occasion before.

With time this problem only becomes bigger. We should have stopped trying to fit everything into nice little boxes ages ago. But instead most of the people, including some of the speakers, don’t even understand that it can only be one Cloud. Maybe they do understand but are so stuck in their little competitive worlds that they don’t want to realize we are all in this together.

There are loads of smart people all across Europe. Yet still we are ages behind the US in everything Cloud. A topic that is widely predicted to become the next big paradigm shift in IT. And the main reason for that is that we do not use our potential because we are busy spreading FUD to cover up the fact our own products lack years behind – technology wise. This isn’t going to change if we don’t do anything about it obviously.

So to come back to the title of this post: Cloud Camp Hamburg sucked because it should have been an event to innovate on the topic rather than a event recapping what should already be common knowledge. A good example for this was the keynote. Chris talked about how in the Cloud automation is key and of course he is completely right. But this should be common knowledge for everyone attending a Cloud Camp at this point in time. Sadly it isn’t and that is the problem. (Now to make this extra clear this isn’t in any way Chris’ fault.)

Some other things that should be common knowledge but aren’t and therefore needed to be said and repeated include:

The reason why we are lacking behind and why we won’t catch up is that despite the fact that there where multiple Cloud Camps in Germany already with basically the same people attending every time we still at best repeat the basics over and over again. Now you don’t take leadership in technology by repeating the status quo over and over again do you?

Please don’t take this as an offensive post against any of the speakers, sponsors or organizers (who did a great job) because I thoroughly include myself in the “we” that failed to live up to it’s full potential yesterday. Can’t we do better?

Was will man mehr?

Da für uns die API und die Möglichkeit eigene Images und Kernel zu nutzen besonders wichtig ist, habe ich mir die API mal etwas genauer angesehen (PDF). Bei der JiffyBox handelt es sich laut der guten Dokumentation um eine RESTFul-API die per JSON kommuniziert. Sieht schonmal sehr gut aus.

Doch gleich auf einer der ersten Seite lese ich folgendes:

Eines der Grundprinzipien, wenn nicht sogar das Grundprinzip von REST ist es für mich, dass jede Ressource über eine eigene URL angesprochen wird. Wenn jetzt allerdings wie hier, als Teil der URL ein API-Token übergeben wird, dann haben die Ressourcen keine eindeutigen URLs, denn diese ändert sich ja mit jedem Login. Das ganze ist jetzt zwar kein Beinbruch und sicher gibts es genug Entwickler in der weiten Welt des Internets, die das ganz anders sehen als ich. Aber es gibt meiner Meinung nach bessere Methoden um Authentifizierungstokens zu übertragen. Z.B. im Header.

Positiv anzumerken ist aber definitiv, dass die API sehr sauber auf die Verwendung der Verben achtet und eine eindeutige Versionierung bietet. Etwas, dass wir bei unserer API bisher noch nicht umgesetzt haben.

Alles in allem bin ich aber von JiffyBox durchaus begeistert und kann es nur begrüßen, dass es damit eine brauchbare alternative zu EC2 aus deutschen Landen gibt. Einzig bei den Instanzengrößen könnte man noch etwas nach oben nachbessern. Aber das kommt sicher mit der Zeit.
